Bio
Carlie Williams is a longtime resident of Seattle and started painting in 2020 at the height of the lockdown. She had never painted or drawn until she found a free box of art materials on the sidewalk during a walk and gave it a go. She uncovered a natural ability and experienced the pure joy it brought her. She began selling her artwork right away and continues to grow her business. Carlie started with watercolor on paper and now primarily uses acrylic on canvas, alcohol ink on paper, acrylic ink, and gold leaf. The art comes from her journey through chronic pain and an ongoing deep dive into mind/body work, always seeking to understand the magic in and around us. She is often inspired by a word or phrase that keeps coming into her head and lets it lead her intuitive process. She lives with her young son and runs her own massage practice in Ballard. As a contemporary expressionist painter, Carlie’s work delves into the intricate layers of human emotion and the ever-evolving relationship between the mind and body. Through the mediums of acrylic, ink, watercolor, and mixed media, she creates an exploration of inner landscapes that invite the viewer to experience the tension between chaos and calm, movement and stillness. At the heart of her practice is a fascination with the emotional depth that can be conveyed through color and form. Her bold, sweeping strokes, saturated colors, and dynamic compositions are a reflection of life’s complex, often intense experiences that shape us. She also makes quieter, more contemplative works, using softer hues and subtler gestures to evoke moments of introspection and deep reflection. Her process is deeply personal, rooted in her own experiences with chronic pain and the relief found through art-making. The contrasting states of intensity and stillness mirror the dualities we experience in life, offering a thoughtful expression of resilience, healing, and self-discovery. Her goal is to create a space where viewers can connect to their own emotional experiences, finding resonance in the contrasts and harmonies that define her work and all of our lives.
