Collection Statement
Throughout my artistic practice I have developed a number of works related to Día de Muertos; original artwork, guided workshops, public installations and live performances.
My Día de Muertos mixed media illustrations are a continuation of a personal narrative that I had created over the last decade. I use calacas, or skeletons, to portray human activities: such as experiencing live music, riding in vintage cars, and dancing at night clubs. I use different mediums to create 2D and 3D pieces: clay, wire, wood boxes, found objects, watercolor pencils and acrylics.
In Seattle, Día de Muertos festivities have gained much popularity. I was one of the first organizers with La Casa de las Artes, that sadly not longer exist, to be included part of the Festival since 2001. Around that time I had the opportunity to collaborate on creating sandpainting or ‘tapetes’ with other Latinx artists at Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Asian Art Museum and Seattle Center.
