Bio
Patricia Nana Afoa Poku (b. 1992, Kumasi, Ghana), is a visual artist currently based in Maryland, United States of America. As a self-taught artist, she began painting in 2018, after completing a
Bachelor of Arts degree at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where she studied Publishing. She has experience in architectural design, marketing, and book publishing. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the American University, Washington, DC, USA.
The artist is interested in the interplay between earth, water, energy, and human experiences. She works with acrylics and alternative materials to create works through abstract expressionism, sculptures, installation, and video.
Through her organic use of color and texture and an exploration of various materials, Patricia successfully depicts movement, change and transformation within her work. Across her abstract paintings, acrylic paint mixed with beach sand and other natural materials, wrap and cover the canvas, creating textural effects that celebrate encounters with color and a natural feel.
She also works with alternative materials to create sculptures. Patricia’s work takes advantage of the complex performative nature of paint, natural materials and plastics, their ability to be molded and crafted to create new forms and
structures to imitate elements in nature. As a dedicated observer, she creates with a distinct perspective to allow viewers to notice the microscopic details in nature and science, from a bird’s eye view, as the planet Earth and universe exists in abstraction.
Patricia Nana Afoa Poku's work has been shown in group exhibitions in galleries and art institutions in Ghana, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Artist Statement
With the creation of human existence and objects to support it, I am inspired by science and the meta event, popularly known as “the Big Bang” in history and how it has transformed with time into what we have in the present day.My work creates a visual language of the elements and nature, from a bird's eye view, as a different perspective, with color and texture to depict movement, change and transformation.
It is a representation of reality and the expansive environment all around me, a continuous representation of countless possibilities of existence way beyond the bounds of time.
My quest is to depict the interplay between earth, water, energy, the immaterial and human existence, as evidence in the material.
The mediums I work with are in paintings, sculpture, installation and video.
