Artist Statement
Felix Delandre's work is influenced by personal and art historical references. It takes form in Abstract, Conceptual and Minimalist paintings or sculptures with the playful use of symbols, colours, words and gestural marks to achieve its effect.
He often paints on canvas offcuts or loose paper, alternating between word riddles, scribbles, Iconography inspired visuals or geometric abstraction. The focus put on experimentation and creative techniques is important and a strong emphasis is given on the intuitive motions of the hand. The approach is both playful and irreverent as the canvas or paper is laid flat on the floor and welcomes accidental marks and the picking up of paint, dirt and other elements of the studio environment.
While artistic precedents appear to be among his works influences, they never settle into certainty. Though vaguely familiar, the images are clear and present themselves with a direct gestural confidence. Much remains ambiguous as the works possess something deep & troubling beneath their simplicity, exploring the very implications of the creative process.
Born in Paris in 1987, he received his Licence in Art Plastiques from the Sorbonne University in 2010 and his Master of Fine Art at the Central Saint Martins in 2011. He now lives and works in London.
