Artwork Description
Description
A self-embracing figure of indigo and blue hues. Seemingly bare and exposed, the figure is yet sheltered by a spherical being above. Maybe the moon, maybe the sun…
Reminiscent of Psalm 91, Shelter is inspired by the strange and siloed times
we’re experiencing, and the desire for peace and safety.

2022
16x20 Acrylic on canvas
Artist Information
Bio
Erika Bell is a Black and Native American bicoastal artist, maker, and musician from Seattle, WA. A creative person since childhood, she found her way to digital art around 2018/19, and approached the canvas around the onset of the pandemic. Her practice soon proved integral to her overall wellbeing, as it opened a new avenue of self-expression and self-care.

Some of Erika's career highlights include exhibition at the L'espace de Rêve Gallery in Harlem, New York - 2022, the Artists of Color Expo & Symposium (ACES) at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute in Seattle, WA - May 2022, the collaborative zine "Free Them All" featuring 40+ artists nationwide in 2020, and being the cover art creator for the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association's fundraiser in 2020.
Artist Statement
I’m a self-taught artist observing human-divine relationship, introspection, and the extraordinariness of everyday Black existence. I find inspiration in people’s stories and ways of moving through and taking up space - particularly that of the marginalized, who often bear the responsibility of manifesting our spaces.

Vulnerability, imperfection, and spirituality are all themes that surround me in artmaking, which, to me, is like journaling, and sometimes dreaming. I believe these energies bring reverence into the creation space.

Bold color, layering, and texture are exciting to me, and acrylics and pastels on canvas and wood are my main mediums of choice.
