Artwork Description
Description
An original piece from the Shadows series.
Collection Statement
This body of work consists of a series of paintings in which straight tangent lines extend from the corners of the shadows created by a human face. Each painting in the series takes a unique approach to the tangent lines and how the areas between them are filled with colour. This creative process is an attempt to remove the individuality of the original face. The organic shapes of the shadows which give each figure its character are subdued by the imposition of the geometric network of lines. Although each human figure is unique, the rules applied during the creation of the work impose a sense of conformity. The final image aims to reflect the relationship between the individuality of people and our imposed social structures.
Artist Information
Bio
Bo Cosfranz was born in Yugoslavia in 1987. She moved to London in 1993, and currently lives and works as a fine artist in Kingston upon Thames. Her focus is on painting, with a style developed through a background in textile, printmaking and sculpture.
Artist Statement
Bo’s work is based on the concept of extending tangent lines from corners in order to create a contrast between the organic and geometric aspects in each piece. Her practice explores how people experience the world, in particular our relationship with rules.

She is motivated by the experience of how individuality can grow within a rigid framework of laws and expectations, and how, in turn, this regulatory framework can be shaped by creativity. She applies these ideas to her process, by combining an intuitive approach with a strict set of rules for the creation of each painting.
