Artwork Description
Description
Growing up, I loved the delicate vintage cameos my grandmother owned, but I never saw one that reflected my own features or the beauty of Black women. This piece was created to bridge that gap and honor my mother,a regal, timeless portrait bathed in gold. Layered with rich oil, gouache, and hand-applied gold leaf, the striking silhouette is adorned with intricate metallic embellishments that command presence and respect. Framed with ornate corner detailing on wood panel, it reclaims a classical
Artist Information
Bio
Abstract & Expressionist Fine Artist

LaMecca Bostwick is an East Coast-born Afro-Latina abstract and expressionist fine artist with six years of professional studio experience, currently pursuing her degree in Fine Arts to further cultivate her creative expression and refine her technical discipline. Selected as a Resident Artist at BelRed Art Studio in October 2025, her work is deeply shaped by her love for travel, global culture, narrative whimsy, vibrant color palettes, and rich textures that honor the memories of her lived experiences.

A U.S. Coast Guard veteran and mother, LaMecca draws profound inspiration from her time underway at sea, particularly her deployments through the icy, ethereal landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic. These polar memories, paired with a personal practice of daily sketching and nature journaling, serve as both a meditative sanctuary and a visual incubator for her storytelling. As her awareness of the world deepens, those observations naturally weave into her practice, becoming an honest reflection of her feelings about our changing environment, human connection, and culture. Rather than preaching, her art invites viewers into a quiet space of contemplation, empathy, and shared humanity.

LaMecca’s textured, story-driven works have been exhibited widely across the region, including Yuan Ru Art Gallery, Blue Cone Art Studio, BelRed Arts District, Inscape Art Studio, Centro Cultural Mexicano, Café Louvre in Edmonds, the Art Mercantile in Everett, and various local creative spaces. Deeply committed to community and creative empowerment, she also hosts intuitive art workshops and serves as a panelist for art gatherings throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Artist Statement
My work is an exploration of memory, movement, and the quiet spaces where nature intersects with human experience. Working primarily in oil, acrylic, and mixed-media collage on canvas and wood panels, I build up heavy textures and luminous layers of gold leaf to echo the enduring structures of the physical world.

As an East Coast-born Afro-Latina artist, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and mother, my creative perspective is deeply informed by my cultural identity, travel, and time spent underway in the icy, majestic landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic. Daily sketching and nature journaling serve as my meditative foundation, allowing me to process stories before they translate onto the canvas. As my awareness of the world deepens, my observations of the environment, heritage, and human relationships naturally weave into my art as an honest reflection of feeling. Ultimately, I invite viewers to pause, step into a moment of quiet contemplation, and find their own sense of sanctuary and shared humanity within the layers.
