Description

Red Map is the last painting I painted on the series Spain as a Peninsula. Peninsulas have some feeling of connection and disconnection, and I think that this feeling expressed (and expresses) very well my quality as a resident of the United States. Being at the extreme of something that keeps them connected, afloat, and that gives them continuity, peninsulas always have some isolation, some loneliness. My peninsulas are almost sexual and show that moment of motherhood that binds me to them. At the same time, my peninsulas also show that other country, which is always there, to the left, expressing continuity as well. In this sense, Red Map takes a step forward in the abstraction and in the expression of the Peninsula, perhaps, not so much as a mother, but as a father: squared, red, strong and with a distorted dimension of the country next to it.

Red Map es el último cuadro que pinté sobre la serie España como Península. Las penínsulas tienen algo de conexión y desconexión, y creo que esto expresaba (y expresa) muy bien mi calidad como residente en los EEUU. Al estar al extremo de algo que las mantiene conectadas, a flote, y que les da continuidad, las penínsulas tienen siempre algo de aislamiento, de soledad. Mis penínsulas son casi sexuadas y muestran ese momento de maternidad que me une a ellas. Al mismo tiempo, mis penínsulas también muestran ese otro país, que siempre está ahí, a la izquierda, continuidad también. En este sentido, Red Map da un paso adelante en la abstracción y en la expresión de la Península, quizá, ya no tanto como madre, sino como padre: cuadriculada, roja, fuerte y con ese otro país de al lado empequeñecido.

Artist Information

Bio

Flora Ramírez-Bustamante grew up in Madrid, Spain. She is a linguist and an artist. As a young adult, she lived and studied in Madrid, Barcelona (Spain) and Athens (Greece). She emigrated to the United States in 2001 and currently lives in the Seattle area. Ramírez- Bustamante is a self-taught artist. She began her artistic training when she moved to the States at local private art schools. She has been painting for more than 20 years. Ramírez- Bustamante has participated in two artists and group exhibitions in Seattle, Oregon and Hawaii.
