Artwork Description
Collection Statement
This collection was inspired by a visit to Mount Etna. These works take inspiration from the pinks, oranges and sage greens taken from the nature around the volcano, surrounded by the blues in the sky and act as an exploration of the subtlety of these tones against the dark scenario. These paintings are the result of months in the studio, of pushing shapes and marks on the canvas while allowing experimentation to occur, by playing with paint pours and overlaying different tones of the same colour, to create new rhythms on the canvas.

Bio
Rita Matos is a London based mixed-media painter.
Born and raised in Portugal, she moved to London and received her MA in 2013.
Rita works in her studio in Hackney Wick where she uses canvas and paper to create works inspired by her surroundings and her emotions.
Artist Statement
Working with paint and taking inspiration from everyday colors and shapes, I seek to explore the connections and the ruptures our memory creates.
While creating abstract images that vary from large to intimate scale, my creative mark-making process allows me to create large and gestural images and layers of color, which are then combine with small and intimate, selective abstract imagery.
By relating the concept of memory, as an act of making and unmaking, of construction and deconstruction, addition and subtraction, my paintings act as an exploration of the notion of accumulation and disappearance, order and chaos, surface and depth and fragmentation, while exploring the idea of the disappearing and replaceable mark, and how the image itself becomes nothing more than a recreated memory.
