Artist Information
Bio
Lutgen comes from a Media background, earning her degree in Communications & Film at the University of Nottingham. With a career in tech and advertising, she began her art practice in 2022. Lutgen is self-taught and has been drawing and painting since she can remember. Through movement as an element of expression, she applies a playful yet serious tone throughout her storytelling.

Lutgen just finished her Soho House artist residency , “Unarchived”, in Shoreditch, where she showcased works from two of her recent series: The First Joget and Why Is My English So Good?.

As part of the exhibition, Lutgen hosted an immersive life-drawing workshop involving sound therapy with friend and fellow artist, Shumaiya Khan (701 Studio, Become).
Artist Statement
Lisa Lutgen is a London based artist via Malaysia and Germany. Lutgen’s work explores identity by playfully interrogating experiences from her multicultural heritage, hence the alias Spicykraut*. She uses the female form in motion to capture her psyche, and combines serious topics peppered with uplifting commentary to inform audiences and spark meaningful, inquisitive dialogue.

*Spicykraut = Lutgen has personified the culinary essentials of her Malaysian-German roots. Malaysian food is rich in flavour and often spicy. “Kraut” is short for “sauerkraut” (sour cabbage), a popular German national dish, and a slur for German soldiers during the war.
