Artist Information
Bio
Tiziano Summo is an artist made in Italy and crafted in London with many years of experience in advertising, start-ups, and events. During the pandemic, he has been undertaking his long-life dream of becoming an artist through a long process of self-discovery and self-awareness.Tiziano's installations examine the complex relationships between art and science, nature and technology, life and death. He believes that only by combining very different subjects is it possible to create something truly unique. With mortality as the central theme of his work, Tiziano challenges contemporary belief systems, thus exploring the uncertainties at the heart of the human experience. His practice is based on one simple truth: to embrace life truly, you must face death.
His works have been published in international art magazines such as FOA and shown at The Other Art Fair London and Salone del mobile di Milano to name a few. This odyssey towards awareness led Tiziano on a therapeutic journey to discover himself and, in turn, invites us to stop, reflect and live.
Artist Statement
Tiziano’s most recent work, ‘Light after death’ (2019-2021), is a series that subverts the traditional hunting trophy. Each skull has been paired with a custom neon shape, contrasting natural decay with the bright shock of an artificial glow. Natural and man-made, rural and urban, traditional and contemporary: these timeless boundaries are blurred and fused, evoking the culturally powerful symbolism of the circle of life. The juxtaposition of the organic shape of a skull and the geometry of the neon embodies the fragility of life and the eternal perfection of maths. Beautiful yet unnerving, the electrifying neon light functions as a light beacon for the curious soul, as well as an unmistakable reminder of our mortality and our defiance in the face of its certainty – resulting in an iconic and thought-provoking series of work. The theme of mortality is more important than ever. Our culture hopes that by making death invisible, taboo, and evil, it can make us forget about what life is really all about. And because we forget death, we forget how to live. Hello Death Studio is an art project based on one truth: that to truly embrace life, you need to face death. As with all dichotomy, one thing can’t exist without the other - and my goal is to create a balance between these two forces. To achieve this Tiziano make one-of-a-kind artworks that speak about life's and death fundamental forces, using all-natural materials and challenging symbolic form.
