Personal Statement

Justine Roland-Cal is a self-taught artist who has been painting for thirty years. She also began working ten years ago with black and white photography. She has since developed a body of work both figurative and abstract which identifies many aspects of her own life, her daily encounters and her political voice. She has a striking use of colour, which prevails in huge ecstatic canvases of abstract expressionism and insightful documentation.
Her documentary photography forms a collection of spontaneous portraits. Her street-based work often concentrates on demos, festivals, parks, random people on the street and domestic portraits, Justine Roland-Cal captures the essence of life and the very nature of what it is to be alive, to form part of an alternative culture, to be European, lively and multi- facetted. Her black-and-white images reveal human life in its various guises and evoke tenderness and warmth for each sitter. The subjects are relaxed and natural before the lens, as if unaware of the photographer and blissfully ignorant of the camera; they are not posing or smiling but caught off-guard in all their vulnerability and humanity. When describing how she works she says she is “drawn to people who look interesting and can sometimes notice someone immediately across a crowded room and feel an excitement about photographing them.” Like Arbus, she can often arrive home with scraps of paper and numbers of those she has met on her escapades and would love to photograph.

She began to exhibit in 1994 and since has exhibited in numerous cultural centres and galleries in Paris where she lived for 18yrs.
Whilst developing as an artist Justine has worked in diverse areas including street theatre as a clown and fire Eater. For three years she worked as an assistant to a fabric buyer at Kenzo in Paris. She was heavily inspired by the exposure to archives of fabrics from all over the world which had bee
Artist Statement
I am an expressionist painter. My work is bright colorful raw and bold. It has been compared to German expressionism and ‘The cobra movement’. It can range from huge abstract paintings to fantasy and political works. I often make work that is concerned with humanitarian issues. I use recycled wood and canvas. My photography is street photography both documentary and portraiture. I have been involved in humanitarian and social documentary projects. My portraits can appear timeless and are raw, intimate, and personal showing a mutual trust with my photographic subject.
I often use my own photography to influence my paintings.
