Artist Information
Bio
Arielle A Labra Campos (she/they) is a queer Latinx illustrator born in Zimbabwe to immigrant parents. Moving at the age of 5, they spent most of their life in South America, living in Chile and Argentina before moving to Seattle in 2018.

From an early age, Arielle painted everything around them. Even the dog. They spent school breaks at their grandparents' beach house in Chile, meters from the ocean. Summers were spent splashing in the water, building sandcastles, and crafting with seashells. In winter, they came indoors, filling their days with drawing. Much of their inspiration comes from the Disney and Pixar movies of their youth - "Finding Nemo", "Atlantis the Lost Empire", "Moana", "The Little Mermaid", and "The Road to El Dorado."

Arielle is inspired by this lifelong connection to the ocean - utilizing blue and purple colorways, and detailed lines and dots to bring her illustrations to life. Her art often combines the creatures of the surface (humans) with oceanic themes. Their main medium is dry media (paper and markers), although some of their work is done with acrylic.
Artist Statement
I am captivated by what we take for granted, how aspects of our lives and our planet are so easily overlooked. How we become immersed in our day-to-day agendas, stuck looking forward, but rarely taking time to breathe and admire this moment. To admire the world around us.

The Planet Earth is dynamic and diverse, constantly in motion. Our human tendency to categorize and separate leads to a false sense of difference - that things are as they should be, and do not intermix. But common ground and shared experience surround us.

Though the underwater world is defined in opposition to the surface, beneath the binary lies connection. Without one, the other one cannot live.

This world, which is full of divergent characteristics, requires totality to achieve balance. In the end, the whole cannot be greater without each of its parts, and reality is made complete by everything around us.
