Artist Information
Bio
Leo Harris is a Seattle area artist whose paintings are a tool for emotional processing, identity exploration, and working through trauma. Born and raised in Russia, they didn’t have the language for or examples of many of the identities that are core to who they are today — art was the way Leo learned to tangibly express what he didn’t have the words for. As a queer, non-binary trans, neurodivergent person, whose story of home and self is ever-evolving, Leo’s work is a representation of his inner world and self.Leo is a self taught artist who paints primarily using acrylic paint occasionally adding other mediums such as ink, pencils and pastels. Leo’s style is strongly informed by their meditative practice and a goal of being present in the moment and using color to explore and express their emotions and experiences.
As a part of their commitment to using art as a modality for healing and building connection, Leo acts as one of the organizers of Queer Art Club Seattle: a regular non-profit gathering of LGBTQIA+ identified artists
Artist Statement
As a teenager I once shared with a friend that I often wondered whether other people’s internality is the same as mine and if it isn’t how would I know if we all use a limited amount of rather general words to describe it with the assumption that it is a shared experience.Later in life I have learned about my neurodivergence and the fact that I live with a lot of dissociation. My internal process, it turned out, was indeed very different from people around.
I pursued abstract art intuitively, first as a way to feel more present and connected to my own feelings and later as an avenue to share my internal process with others. Where words have failed me, colors and shapes managed to convey strange and fractured dreamlike landscapes of my mind. I believe everyone can make art and my mission is to spread awareness of art as a form of somatic healing and a basis for building community.
