Bio
In Ailsa Munro’s world, nature is sprawling, filling the frame with abundant lifeforms.Living and working in the city, Munro’s own connection to nature comes in many forms - the wildlife and organisms that co-exist in an urban environment; the fungi found and foraged; and the plants that she nurtures and maintains in her home. The process of propagating and growing plants has long inspired Munro’s work, as has the reciprocal relationship between human beings and the natural world, the individual and the collective.
A personal exploration of the connection between mental health and the great outdoors, Munro’s work offers an optimistic vision, with dynamic designs painted in sunny colours and swirling brush marks.
Graduating from Brighton University with a BA in Printed Textile Design, Munro has designed for many international fashion brands. She has, more recently, exhibited her giclée prints and original works with The Other Art Fair in October 2021 & 22 and Enter Gallery, Brighton.
Artist Statement
With almost microscopic accuracy, Munro’s work focuses on the vegetative world, the topic of climate change and the de- and re-wilding of our planet - an interconnected network of living organisms that often appear still, but fizz with energy and life. Munro’s latest series explores hyper-intelligent networks operating beneath the surface, looking closely at the role mycelium and soil health play in the survival of Earth. Drawn from observational studies and digitised into imagined environments.
Hand-painted in gouache, using smooth lines and a rich colour palette Munro creates an abundance of highly-stylised plant life - which, once digitised, continue to multiply and grow. Creating a sense of depth and balance through the clever use of perspective, soft focus and shadows, small details and idiosyncrasies are scattered throughout, treading the line between chaos and order.
