Artwork Description
Description
Black and white photograph of a geometric shape on a contrasting background. Linear border is added to allow full image to be defined on a white background. It is not part of the actual photograph.
11" x 14" image matted to 16" x 20" (with frame 21" x 17" x 1")
Collection Statement
If abstract art, as it is sometimes defined, is work which neither represents, imitates nor refers to external reality, then it is theoretically impossible to produce a purely abstract photograph. Lens-based work may be abstract in appearance, but the capture process itself requires some initial “real” object. With Bound/Unbound, I set out deliberately to create work which pushed at the boundaries of abstraction.

The series is about light, shape, symmetry as well as its absence. I photographed handmade paper constructions on a light box, then digitally manipulated them post-production. The resulting images
have been shown nationally in galleries and ZigZag was selected for publication in the Manifest International Photography Annual 6.
Artist Information
Bio
Michelle Friars is an artist and photographer who lives on a small island in the Salish Sea just a short ferry ride from Seattle. Her background as an art historian specializing in medieval and 14th c Italian art left her with a love of tales of mystery and the miraculous. She originally got into photography to shoot reference photos for portrait work and to document finished artwork. Over time, she developed a penchant for taking photos as an artistic practice on its own. Michelle is an alum of Columbia University and the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier at Gage Academy in Seattle. Her drawings and photographs have appeared in galleries, museums and publications across the U.S.
