Artist Information
Bio
I am a professional landscape photographer with 35 years of experience and now in the process of navigating retirement from the more commercial aspects of my career. Together with my partner photographer Mary Liz Austin, we primarily licensed our images to publishers of books, calendars, travel magazines, etc. on a freelance basis. Our extensive travels have taken us across North America and to selective locations around the world to satisfy the needs of our clients.

Throughout this career, I have also enthusiastically pursued various projects of a more personal nature photographing subjects, locations and people; creating a collection of imagery very different from my commercial work. In recent years it is this more personal collection that has received my primary attention. My stance and attention now is concentrated on gallery associations and exhibitions. In getting my photography on walls and not so much in print.
Artist Statement
Photography for me is a form of inquiry. I capture images to deepen my understanding of that which is in front of me calling for my attention. This photographic process causes me to be slow, to see more closely and critically, and to enrich my relationship with the subject and the world. In my more successful efforts, my imagery will inspire a viewer and perhaps elicit a recognition of some commonality of our human experience.

More technically, I am a traditionalist. I am attracted to photographic compositions which are elemental and simple; direct and uncomplicated. My eye is calibrated to black and white - unless the color within the subject is crucial to the composition. Then, maybe color.
