Bio

Susan Thompson is an abstract painter based at Kindred Studios, London.

Susan’s interest in art started in childhood. She used to spend hours doodling and
copying images from her favourite comics. Although she has spent the majority of
her working life nursing;she has always made time to engage in some form of art
making and further education. This has included completing an Art Foundation
Course at the Camberwell School of Art in 1984, an Art Therapy Postgraduate
Diploma at Goldsmiths College in 1990 and more recently, a BA Hons Fine Art
Degree at Oxford Brookes University in 2014.

As a nurse and artist, she considers the disciplines of nursing and art to be
interconnected. The art of nursing is the intentional creative use of oneself, based
upon skill and intuition to transmit emotion and meaning to another. She feels that
this can be applied to art. The artist attempts to convey a myriad of emotions and
experiences through their creations.

Artist Statement

My‌ ‌approach‌ ‌to‌ ‌painting‌ ‌can‌ ‌be‌ ‌described‌ ‌as‌ ‌intuitive,‌ ‌creating‌ ‌images‌ ‌by‌ ‌following‌ ‌a‌ ‌feeling‌ ‌or ‌ knowing,‌ ‌something‌ ‌that‌ ‌cannot‌ ‌be‌ ‌put‌ ‌into‌ ‌words.‌ I start my journey willing to explore and play with whatever happens in the process. A start of a painting can be triggered by a random mark, a piece of music, a colour or the beat of a song.

My influences are not always obvious. They emerge from external and internal references and experiences. I do not use sketch books or do research in the formal sense. However I soak up visual data and information in my everyday life which contributes to my reservoir of possibilities. I prefer to trust in the creative process and my urge to paint. A painting can take shape from just spreading ink over the surface of the canvas. I like to approach each piece with an open mind willing to experiment and respond in the moment. For me pre-planning takes away that spontaneity and discovery in the process.

I work mostly in acrylics but also use inks, charcoal and oils to create improvised abstract paintings on canvas, linen, paper and gesso panels .I use various size masking tapes like a drawing tool to create form and depth. Applying thin glazes and inks adds to the random nuances and textures. My paintings are a combination of loose marks and texture contrasted with more controlled geometric shapes. There are also references to landscapes, structures and patterns.

Colour features strongly in my work. I am enthused by bold colour and its variations. The random mixing of colours to find that striking hue is part of the joy of my painting process.

The use of poetry is also a feature in my work. The words appear after the image has been made as a meditative response to the piece.
