Bio

The artist Sara Hoque was born in North Yorkshire in 1991, to a Norwegian mother and British/Bengali Father. As a child, Hoque had a multi-cultural nomadic upbringing which is now reflected in her current work and habitat. Since graduating, she has been living in London and currently resides on a 40ft narrowboat cruising the waterways. During her childhood, the artist was inspired by the fairly rural areas of Wales and Norway, nature being the main subject of her drawings. She travelled to a lot of unusual and beautiful places where she felt amazed and in awe at the vastness of the forests and seas.

“I’ve always wanted to capture this feeling so I began to experiment with digital photography. Using images I’d taken of Norwegian woodlands; I began to manipulate the colours to convey this magic I felt. This natural beauty and wonder I experienced whilst visiting these places as a child, has stayed with me and is now reflected in my paintings. I often find myself bored by the mundane and the everyday and my work is an effort to get back to the power and mystery of these places”.

Hoque studied Fine Art at Kingston University, in London which was her first experience of living in a larger City and during her third year moved to central London. During her studies, she was introduced to landscape paintings by old masters exploring the ’sublime’, a quality of greatness beyond comprehension which gave context to her transcendental experiences in nature. Through her research into art movements, Hoque also became fascinated by the surrealists and how art is linked to dreams and the unconscious. To this day her work has evolved to include themes of altered states of consciousness and delves deeper into transcendental experiences. Her paintings are an escape which mimics the dreams and memories she has of these natural worlds.

“Through the act of painting, I can tap into a ‘flow state’ which transports me back to these magical places I’ve experienced throughout my life. Pai

Artist Statement

By using acrylic paint and collaged images, I aim to capture the natural beauty and wonder which we experience in nature. These profound and magical emotions associated with awe are captured in colourful gradients and vivid brushstrokes. As a young child we experience these moments frequently; a privilege we often outgrow. I believe this wonderful and often forgotten way of seeing the world has an impact on our emotional wellbeing.

With manipulated images I create visually appealing compositions with loose, abstract narratives. I enjoy blurring the lines between reality and dreams by mixing familiar imagery with vivid colours and unbounded forms. At the core of my practice is a sense of escapism. There is the desire to escape back into landscapes, dreams and memories. To create worlds you can get lost in.

Through the act of painting, I can tap into a ‘flow state’ which transports me back to these magical places I’ve experienced throughout my life. Painting is an effort to get back this feeling of awe; a way for me to capture it and transport the viewer to other planes. The awe and inspiring energy of nature propels me to create the dream-like wonder I experienced.
