Rory Mchales

Rory Mchales

they / she
Seattle, United States

Bio

Rory (she/they) is a self-taught artist in Seattle creating expressive paintings, abstract embroideries, and assemblage pieces.

Rory’s educational background is in Sociology and Art History, eventually leading her to become a full-spectrum doula, supporting people as they build families in the way best for them, particularly queer and other marginalized family structures.

She has exhibited at several shows in Seattle in the past few years, including at The Vera Project, Push/Pull, Hillman City Collaboratory, and more. Rory is a member of the Living Artists Collective, a nonprofit that uplifts practicing artists so they can remain in increasingly expensive cities.

Artist Statement

Texture and bright color permeates Rory’s work. Whether it is embroidery, painting, or collage/assemblage, their art frequently includes a rich color palette and fine details that weave together a balanced piece. Her work often revolves around themes of intimacy, identity, family, health, change, and transformation - informed by both her personal experiences and work as a doula. Previous projects have included a series of reproductive justice-themed embroideries, and they aim to continue creating work that dismantles traditional notions of relationships and family.
