Richard Fuller
Bio
Richard Fuller is an abstract painter living and working in London. Born in 1963, and growing up on the family farm in South East England, his brightly coloured paintings are inspired by the big skies, the luminous sunsets and the ever present horizon of this mysterious landscape.
Although excellng at Art at school, he studied Agriculture at university, aiming to join his father in the farm business, but later changed career choice after a transformational six month working holiday in Australia where he backpacked around the country. In 1987 he joined BBC Television News, where he worked for many years on live programs and also as a video editor.
Visiting art exhibitions inspired nim to take art lessons. He completed courses at many of the major art colleges in London including A Level Art (A grade), and Foundation Studies at London Guildhall University, ("known as the Aldgate Bauhaus").
Leaving the BBC in 2004 to concentrate on his art career, he initially painted a series of large scale flowers set against brightly coloured backgrounds. His recent abstract paintings, also defined by their bright colours, are inspired by the natural world, the sky and the changing seasons.
He has artwork in private collections in Europe, the USA and Australia.
Artist Statement
My series of Abstract Sky Paintings are composed of horizontal bands and blocks of colour which are at once abstract and yet also evocative of the bands of colour seen in the sky. Executed using Michael Harding artisan oil paints on Bella Italia gesso panels from Italy, they are made by painting many thin layers of oil paint onto the pure white gesso of the wood panels. With thin glazes of transparent colours, the brilliant white of the gesso panel shines through giving the paint a luminosity, an internal glow, in the manner of the "Old Masters". This contrasts with thicker paint in other areas. I often try to emphasise the three dimensional aspects of the paintings as some colours advance and others retreat or appear to be in shadow. I also try to make my paintings radiate with colour.
