Artist Statement
I’m a painter based in Tacoma, WA. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for nearly two decades, I’ve developed an appreciation for both the urban and natural environments that surround me. Growing up with poor eyesight, combined with a subsequent career in graphic design, I key to the graphic color blocking of my environment. My landscapes retain the soft focus and emphasis on color I took from that history.
This series began with long drives taken during the pandemic ‘just to get out.’ As the world expanded again I’ve been able to take inspiration from my travels throughout the western United States. What started as an interesting graphic treatment to window the landscapes on the canvas, evolved into an interesting metaphor of looking out from inside and the need to ‘just get out.’
