“Mayan Whisper” Last year during my short trip to Puerto Morelos, a small beach town in the Yucatan Peninsula, I realized that most natives speak Spanish, English and Tzotzil. I want Mayan descendants to advocate for fair labor, to pass on rituals, tradition and language as more and more people move to urban areas or migrate to the United States leaving everything behind.
My paintings have been created within the last few months, they are visual whimsical narratives such as “Yourba’s brew”, a hechicera calling for peace and healing; a “Mayan Curandera” praying on their native language tzotzil and a third painting a “Xilomena” a corn fairy. These 3 paintings depict divine women showing strength, wisdom and beauty, each one surrounded by shiny gold where in many cultures, gold is a symbol of power, divinity and immortality.
