I created my series of dinosaurs playing sports when I was asked to make some work that would appeal to children. Children love dinosaurs and even the very youngest know the names of the most complicated ones. I felt that the dinosaurs would not have died out if they had had something to do or play with. \r\n\r\nWhen researching for an exhibition to commemorate Darwin’s voyage to the Galapagos a few years ago I came across the blue footed boobies who have bright blue feet and display them as part of their mating dance. The brighter blue their feet, the healthier they are and the more successful they are as mates. I took this concept further and combined with my mathematical love of pattern made them even more colourful.\r\n\r\nI created a series of London pubs which are much loved by their local community. They are all in beautiful buildings with lovely architectural details and have interesting histories. Our local pubs are the heart of our community, it's time to celebrate them and support them. It was threatened with being redeveloped into luxury flats in 2001. It was saved by a campaign led by its articulate and persuasive patrons John Snow, Rufus Sewell and Andrew Motion, who successfully petitioned to save it in just eight days.\r\n\r\nIt was built in about 1868 as a watering hole for workers on the railways. There are pineapples above every window which refer to its name. No one knows why it was called The Pineapple, perhaps it was because this tropical fruit, which was an exotic rarity in Victorian times, is sometimes considered a symbol of hospitality.\r\n\r\nSigned and numbered on the front at the bottom. This lovely pub has a rooftop bar where you can gaze at the stars while enjoying a cocktail.\r\n\r\nCulpeper lived round the corner at 92 Commercial Street. Culpeper translated medical books into English from Latin so that people could diagnose themselves. He came to Spitalfields to be outside the jurisdiction of the College of Physicians. He was one of the first to propose that healthcare should be given free as a basic human right, treating local people without charge each day at his surgery in Red Lion House.\r\n\r\nSigned and numbered on the front at the bottom. It got its unusual name because it was the last stop on the coach heading north out of London. Apparently, the coach man would call out “The Bull and last” as they approached the pub - the last stop.\r\n\r\nHighgate and the surrounding area had an established drinking culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. If you wandered into some of the public houses you might be asked for a fee to take part in the ‘Swearing on the Horns’ oath. This was a ceremony unique to Highgate and the oath involved committing to ‘merriment and debauchery’. The local landlord would be there to oversee the initiation. A man would hold a set of stag antlers and the individual would be expected to kiss or salute the horns with encouragement from regulars. Once the oath was taken, the oath taker became a ‘Free person of Highgate Village’, which would mean free drinks for him and his friends if he were to be found penniless but, if this was not the case, he would have to buy a round of drinks for the entire pub. It is the birthplace of Camden Town Brewery, founder Jasper Cuppaidge started making beer in the pub basement in 2006. By 2010 he moved the brewing to underneath the railway arches of Kentish Town West. The Horseshoe is the first of Camden Town Brewery's three pubs, and serves simple, great food\r\n\r\nThe interior was designed by Simone McEwan and plenty of the Horseshoe’s old charm remains. Jasper wanted to keep the memories of the previous Horseshoe, so they kept the old chairs. Every time one of Jasper’s friends had a baby, their name was painted on the back of the original chairs. The concept was simply ‘beer, maintenance and durability’. The pub used to get trashed at weekends; it was one of the only drinking dens in Hampstead so Jasper wanted it weekend-proof.
